Alfeizerão Pillory
Alfeizerão Pillory
The Alfeizerão Pillory was built in 1514 following the charter attributed by D. Manuel I to that locality.
Even so, the first reference to Alfeizeirão dates from the conquest of its Arab castle by D. Afonso Henriques, in 1147.
As in many other cases, Pelourinho de Alfeizerão also did not have an easy life having suffered several adversities.
Having been overthrown in the 19th century, it was later rebuilt, already in the 80s of the 20th century, from fragments of the original Pillory that were found in the area surrounding it.
In the 19th century, the Pillory of Alfeizerão suffered damage as a result of a religious festival held in the square where it is built.
Despite its troubled existence, the Pelourinho de Alfeizerão has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1933, certified of its importance and the identity testimony it represents for Alfeizerão.
