Alcobaça Castle

Alcobaça Castle is a medieval building that was rebuilt by D. Afonso Henriques in the 12th century after it was conquered by the Moors.

Over the centuries, the castle underwent concussions and remodeling until it was overthrown by the indication of Queen D. Maria II in the 19th century.

In the second half of the 19th century, part of the castle was rebuilt in an attempt to restore some of the importance of that heritage.

Due to its troubled life, Alcobaça Castle no longer has the splendor of other times, although, despite everything, it continues to be an example of Portugal’s beginnings, a symbol of the formation process of the country and the conquest of the national territory initiated by D. Afonso Henriques.

The Castle is also an excellent viewpoint over the entire city, being a perfect place to capture and contemplate its majestic Monastery.

Classified as a Building of Public Interest since 1978, the Castle is a place that deserves to be considered and that you should not miss visiting, being able to work with a point to end your visit in any evening.
