Aljubarrota Pillory

The construction of the Aljubarrota Pillory is due to the fact that Aljubarrota is part of the group of thirteen villages of the cistercience abbey of Alcobaça, founded by King D. Afonso Henriques in 1147.

The Aljubarrota Pillory was built following the attribution of the charter by King D. Manuel I in 1514, and is therefore a symbol of power but also of justice and a testimony to the heritage and identity of Aljubarrota.

It is never too much to remember that Aljubarrota became famous for the Battle of Aljubarrota, a conflict that opposed Portuguese troops commanded by King D. João I and Constable D. Nuno Alvares Pereira against the Castilians, led by D. Juan I de Castile, it was the afternoon of August 14, 1385.

The Aljubarrota Pillory is another of the heritage sites of the municipality of Alcobaça, which has been classified as a Property of Public Interest, in this case since 1933, and is therefore also an indispensable place for visits to the municipality.

You can also complement with a visit to the São Vicente de Aljubarrota Church, the Sacred Art Center of Aljubarrota and a visit to the Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres Church that together form a heritage and museum tour with a guided tour promoted by the Parish Council Aljubarrota.
