Raul da Bernarda Museum

Inaugurated in 2000, the Raul da Bernarda Museum in Alcobaça discusses the history of the largest and oldest representative of the Faience of Alcobaça, the Raúl da Bernarda & Filhos, Lda.

The factory was founded in 1875 by José dos Reis and the property was initially transferred to Manuel Ferreira da Bernarda in 1900 and later, in the late 1920s, to his son Raul da Bernarda.

Looking back on the life of the company, the Museum seeks to exhibit an exemplary collection of the work that the factory developed and, at the same time, to pay a fair tribute to the family that contributed decisively to giving it dynamics and popularity.

The museological nucleus of the Museum is divided into two thematic exhibitions: on the one hand “The Costumes of Rancho do Alcoa, alluding to Alcobaça crockery” and on the other hand, the “Raul da Bernarda Ceramics Collection”.

If pottery is an art that interests you, you must visit the Raul da Bernarda Museum, and we advise you to complement it with a visit to the Faience Museum of Alcobaça and the Ceramics Museum, the José Malhoa Museum or the Fábrica de Bordalo Pinheiro faience, these last two here very close in Caldas da Rainha.
