Roman Village of Parreitas

Located in the hills of Bárrio and overlooking the old Pederneira lagoon, there is the ancient and precious Roman Village of Parreitas.

Testimony of the Roman occupation of the Iberian Peninsula, this Roman Village has not reached our days.

With three lines of walls and some housing structures from the 1st to the 4th centuries being known.

Referenced to the existence of the Village since the end of the 19th century, by the Alcobacense archeologist Vieira Natividade, the archaeological excavations of the village would only have a systematic character from 1980 onwards by the team of Prof. Doctor Pedro Gomes Barbosa.

Even so, the village is a must-visit place and stands out for its historical, cultural and archaeological importance, essential to the definition of local identity and to testify to its importance for predecessor civilizations.

However, the interest of the place is not limited to the historical remains, it also deserves mention for the beauty of the landscape that surrounds the Roman Village of Parreitas.

A visit to the Monographic Museum of Bárrio will be an excellent complement to the visit to the village, with that museum space having a nucleus called “Os Romanos em Alcobaça” that acts as an interpretation center of Vila Romana de Parreitas.

For lovers of the remains of the Roman passage through Portuguese lands, this Village can and should be complemented with a visit to the Roman Villa of Eburobrittium in Óbidos.

You definitely can’t miss it!
